Out with Don
The Castro in transition

Don Gardner

We started OnTheCastro.com to chronicle the events and people of everyones favorite LGBT neighborhood, the Castro district. But it soon became apparent we are chronicling a neighborhood in transition.

In one respect, the neighborhood has always been changing. It has only been some 40 years since the first openly gay bar in the Castro hung out its sign. Soon after, Eureka Valley became world-famous for it's nightlife and a gay neighborhood. Homosexuals and bars have been around for a long time indeed, but not so the idea of an openly gay neighborhood to live, work and play.

Today the sense is the Castro is changing again, and like many gay neighborhoods, becoming less gay and more diverse. Fifty years ago the idea of a LBGT culture--let alone a gay neighborhood--would have been considered impossible. Because the very concept of what it means to be homosexual continues to transform. And 50 years from now gay neighborhoods, like the Castro, may again be a thing of the past.

While I have some very definite opinions on this and other topics I plan to share with you in the coming months and years, I'm more interested in what you think.

The purpose of this website is to be the video-news-magazine for everyone in our community and beyond.
